Sir Andrew Huxley (1917-2012) was one of the greatest scientists of the 20th century, making three of the most important discoveries in the field of nerve and muscle physiology. He described how ions carry electrical signals in nerves, how the contraction of muscle cells is triggered by the transmission of electrical signals deep within the cell, and how molecular motors enable muscles to exert force and shorten.
