The European Community has recently admitted the linkages between peaceful uses of nuclear energy and the sustainable development goals and therefore is considering to invest in the expansion of the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology. However, we should never forget that nuclear weapons are around us and represent an everyday risk for all humanity. In this article, the debate in the community of concerned scientists will be briefly presented also in consideration of the recent entry into force of the Treaty of Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
