One can admit that a democratic society can’t be left at the mercy of its own institutions but on the contrary it must keep those institutions under control. For example, the journal editors, the politicians who assign public funds, etc.., must watch over the sciences and they must intervene when it becomes evident that the research is useless or even dangerous.
